Power Cut Tips
This page contains a list of useful tips to consider when you are experiencing a power cut.
Before a power cut:
- Keep multiple torches along with extra batteries.
- Make sure your mobile phone is charged so you can make calls in the case of an emergency.
- Find a battery powered radio to receive updates from local radio stations.
During a power cut:
- Use portable phone chargers.
- Keep freezers and fridge doors closed.
- Put a blanket over your fridges and freezers, as they will stay cold for many hours.
- Turn off appliances like irons and electric fires as they could be a hazard if the power comes back on and you're not at home.
- Leave at least one light in your house turned on so you know when supplies have been restored.
- Write down a list of important contacts in case your phone dies.
- Check on your neighbours.
After a power cut:
- Electronic clocks may have lost their time, check and set if the time has reset.
- Check your thermostat and check the timer is correct.
- In some cases you may need to reset MCBs that have tripped in your distribution board (consumer unit).

If you are experiencing an unexpected power cut, call 105 from your landline phone (this will still work during a power cut,
however you may need to use a corded phone) to contact your Distribution Network Operator (local board).
